Chesapeake College freshman catcher/infielder Eddie Nevins – one of the state’s top baseball hitters for both power and average – has been named to the all-Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference first team.

Nevins, a South County (Fairfax, Va.) High graduate, finished second in the conference in hitting (.436) and RBI (63), and fourth in homers (13).  He also scored 48 runs and stole 20 bases.

“It’s awesome that it happened,” Nevins said of the all-state honor.  “I’m grateful for that and thankful to my teammates.”

Nevins said attitude had a lot to do with his success.

“It was probably the most relaxed season I’ve had,” said Nevins.  “I didn’t try to go out and do something I couldn’t or be someone I’m not.  I just wanted to enjoy it and take it all in.  You only get one freshman year.”

Freshman infielder/pitcher Tyler Galazin (Notre Dame High/Langhorne, Pa.) was named to the all-state second team.  Galazin hit .389 with six home runs and 33 RBI while scoring 61 runs.  He also finished with 28 stolen bases, which was the second-highest total in the conference.

Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski said the two all-conference selections share many attributes.

“Both players are talented, have a strong work ethic, and have a ‘team-first’ attitude,” said Szymanski.

Nevins and Galazin were both members of a freshman class that helped the Skipjacks turn around their 15-26 record from 2015 into 32-22 this spring.  Chesapeake finished fourth in the conference with a 16-10 league mark.

“This year’s team had the ability to win close games,” said Szymanski.  “We believed we could win, we have several come-from-behind wins, and we had a lot of big wins on the road.”

“This team was really connected,” said Nevins, who is playing this summer in the Ripken League with the Rockville Express.  “I remember coming and seeing a couple of [Chesapeake] games last year and that team didn’t seem to have great chemistry. This team had chemistry and had a great time together.  I think that makes the game fun and more enjoyable.”
