Momentum Builds in Season’s Second Half
Chesapeake women’s basketball coach Gwen Barnes is looking for one thing from her Skipjacks and it can be summarized in one word: consistency.
Five times, a victory has been followed by a loss. Barnes knows the team has more potential, and she expects to see it displayed on the court in the second half of the season.
In the Skipjacks’ latest game, they thumped Westchester Community College, 67-47, as the visitors outscored Westchester by 11 points in the final quarter to pull away. Chesapeake rode the performances of Kendal Moxey (16 point, 17 rebounds) and Aniyah Quow (22 points).
The Skipjacks hope to continue that momentum when they travel to play Garrett College Saturday at 1 p.m. in McHenry.
“I would definitely say it’s coming together,” explained Barnes, who is in her ninth year as coach. They are looking better and understanding what needs to be done. I am excited about the team.”
Barnes says the team – which has an 8-5 record — will show more consistency if each player continues to understand how to contribute most effectively in each game. That’s happening more now than earlier in the season.
“We are working on helping each player to understand how to contribute to each game a lot more,” Barnes said. “That’s helping to define what their roles are. The more we do that, the more we will see the consistency come in.”
The Skipjacks are averaging 69.1 points per game, but Barnes expects that total to grow – and perhaps significantly.
Chesapeake has four players averaging in double figures: freshman center Moxey (16.1), freshman guard Ayanni Brown (11.3), freshman guard Sharon Brown (10.7) and sophomore guard Aniyah Quow (10.2).
Two more players are taking aim at averaging in double figures. The scoring of both freshman guard Kayla Collins and sophomore guard/forward Deliayh Mohamed is on the rise.
“With our balanced scoring, we are going to see more of it among our players,” Barnes said. ”We want to see other players step up and get close to double figures. I don’t think its going to just be those four. It may wind up being six players in double figures.”
If Barnes had to pick a team Most Valuable Player, Moxie, a Queen Anne’s County High School graduate, would be an easy choice.
The 6-foot-4 freshman is averaging a double-double. That’s 16.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.
Moxie had a memorable game against visiting Anne Arundel Community College on December 1. She totaled 32 points and 21 points in a 94-67 rout.
“She is already being looked at by Division I colleges,” Barnes said. “She can really move on the court, and she is great from the free throw line. When it comes to rebounding, she is hard to defend and box out. She is just a well-rounded player.”
Barnes has also been impressed with freshman guard/forward Kayla Collins, a Kent County High graduate.
“On a good night, she is pulling down a double-double,” Barnes said. “Her game is coming along very nicely.”
Barnes is excited about the team’s potential for the second half of the season.
“We took some bumps and bruises in the first half,” she said. “We will learn from those mistakes and do better.”
