Natural Resource Biologist Alexis Park acquired some new workforce skills through Skilled Trades classes at Chesapeake College. After 20 years of working on the water, Alexis was interested in learning how to maintain the Yamaha outboard motors she uses for work with the DNR Fishing and Boating Services.

With the department’s busy days of taking samples, scheduling time for motor servicing at a shop is difficult. So, Alexis took her DIY spirit and enrolled in the Introduction to Marine Engine Systems and In-Line Outboard Engine Service classes at Chesapeake.

“I feel confident in performing the regular maintenance required now. Plus, when I am in the field on the water sampling, I have the skills to troubleshoot any issues that may occur. As a woman I have always worked in a male dominated field and the Marine Trades field is no different. I felt very comfortable in the classes, with the required tasks, working with the other men during classes, and the instructor was very motivating and helpful. I recommend these courses for anyone who works or plays on the water,” she said.
