Cultural Regalia Approved for Commencement
Cultural Regalia Approved for Commencement
Chesapeake College has taken an important step toward fostering inclusivity and recognizing the diverse backgrounds of its graduates. In January 2025, the Board of Trustees has unanimously approved the Cultural Regalia Policy, ensuring that students can now wear cultural regalia during commencement to honor their heritage, traditions, and identity.
This achievement is the result of student-led advocacy, with support from faculty, staff, and college leadership. Several student organizations played a crucial role in championing this policy, including:
- Student Government Association (SGA)
- Hispanic Latino Student Union (HLSU)
- UHURU Black Student Union (BSU)
- Chesapeake Pride Organization

Student leaders spoke passionately before College Council, sharing their personal experiences and advocating for the right to celebrate their identities on such a significant day. Their efforts helped bring this long-discussed change to reality:
- Haley Wondrash – SGA President
- Cianni A. Phillips – UHURU BSU President, Student DEI Office Lead Program Assistant
- Lochness Moore – Pride Organization President
- Angel Fernandez Perez – HLSU Marketing
For many students, this policy represents more than just the ability to wear cultural regalia—it symbolizes recognition, respect, and belonging. As one student shared in their statement to the Board:
“Walking the stage in cultural regalia is an act of empowerment. It sends a powerful message to future generations that our culture is something to be celebrated, not hidden.” – Hispanic Latino Student Union
In addition to student advocacy, faculty and staff played a key role in supporting and guiding this initiative. Special thanks go to Dean of Students Dr. Miriam Osborne Elliott for her leadership, and to faculty and staff members who provided mentorship and assistance throughout this process. Their collaboration helped ensure the policy met institutional standards while honoring student voices.

This new policy will take effect for the Spring 2025 Commencement Ceremony. Graduates who plan to wear cultural regalia are encouraged to review the policy guidelines to ensure their attire aligns with the standards set by the college.
